How Guru Nanak Chose His Successor
A story of devotion, humility, and true service — as Guru Nanak revealed the qualities of a true spiritual leader.
The Test of Devotion
Bhai Laihna was a devoted disciple of Guru Nanak. When the time came to choose a successor, Guru Nanak already knew in his heart that Bhai Laihna was the right choice. But his wife insisted that his sons should be considered too.
One day, Guru Nanak, his sons, and several disciples walked through a forest. They came across a filthy pond. Guru Nanak dropped a vessel into it and asked his sons to retrieve it. They refused, saying the water was too dirty and the vessel unimportant.
Then Guru Nanak turned to Bhai Laihna. Without hesitation, Bhai Laihna stepped into the dirty pond and retrieved the vessel.
Question and Answer
1. Who did Guru Nanak choose as his successor and why?
Guru Nanak chose Bhai Laihna as his successor. Not simply because he obeyed — but because he showed the qualities of a true leader: someone willing to enter the dirty water of the world’s sins to help others without thinking of themselves.
💡 Moral: True leaders are those who humbly serve others, even if it means getting their hands dirty. Leadership is service, not status.
