The Story
Once, Guru Nanak and his disciples had been travelling for two days without finding a village or food. Despite their hunger, Guru Nanak remained calm, while his disciples were restless with hunger. They came to rest under a tree by a canal, and Guru Nanak noticed something under the tree. He asked his disciples to check and see if there was something to eat.
The disciples went to the tree and saw that whatever was under it was covered with a sheet. One of them said, "This looks like a dead body. Dead bodies are covered with sheets." Another one said, "Are we supposed to eat a dead body?" They hesitated, wondering how their Guru could ask them to eat something like this. No one dared to touch the sheet, until Lehna, Guru Nanak’s most devoted disciple, stepped forward.
Lehna’s Devotion
Lehna, full of faith and devotion to Guru Nanak, resolved to lift the sheet and see what lay beneath it. He said, "No matter what lies beneath the sheet, I will definitely eat it." He removed the sheet, and to the surprise of everyone, it revealed delicious fruits. The disciples joyfully began eating the fruits.
Lehna’s Selflessness
Among the fruits, Lehna picked two mangoes. However, instead of eating them immediately, he thought of his Guru, who had also been without food for two days. Lehna went to Guru Nanak and offered him the two mangoes, saying, "Guru Nanak, please eat these mangoes first." Meanwhile, the other disciples had completely forgotten about their Guru in the excitement of the fruits and had begun eating for themselves.
