God's Plan
A Divine Lesson About Trusting in Higher Wisdom
The Priest's Concern
Surendra was the priest of a temple. He was a simpleton and was devoted to God. Hundreds of people would come to the temple daily, make offerings, chant prayers and ask God for something or the other. How tired God must be of standing in one place listening to everybody, he thought. One day, he spoke to God about it.
"God, if it is of any help to you, I am willing to stand in your place for a day so that you can take a break." God said, "Sure. That would be great. But just follow my instructions. Stand quietly just like I do. Don't be affected by what people do or say. Don't respond to them. Everything will work out as per my plan." Surendra happily agreed.
The Divine Experiment
The next day, he was transformed into the idol of God and stood in His place in the temple. Very early in the morning, a rich woman came. She prayed for her husband's success and gave a huge donation. By mistake, she left her purse behind. Surendra saw her purse, but remembered that he could not call out to her.
She was followed by the flower seller of the temple who took out a one rupee coin and prayed to the Lord for her family's survival. After finishing her prayers, she saw a purse full of money. Thinking that she had been gifted the purse by God Himself, she took it and went away. Surendra wanted to call her back but he knew that he wasn't supposed to.
The Unfolding Drama
Then came an air hostess. She was supposed to go on a long flight and had come to pray for a safe journey. Meanwhile, the rich woman who had forgotten her wallet came into the temple with a policeman. Since the air hostess was standing at the spot where she had forgotten her purse, she told the police to arrest the air hostess on suspicion.
Now the air hostess was out of her wits. She appealed to God to prove her innocence and save her from the police. Surendra could remain silent no more and decided to use his powers as God. He spoke to the rich woman and cleared the misunderstanding by telling her that it was the flower seller of the temple who had innocently taken her purse and that the air hostess was indeed innocent. The rich woman said that she would find the flower seller and get her purse back from her.
The Divine Revelation
They all thanked God for coming to their rescue and went away. At the end of the day, God asked Surendra how he had fared. "What you do is simply amazing, Lord," said Surendra. "But I too did something good today." He went on to narrate the story of the rich woman, the flower seller and the air hostess.
But God smiled subtly on hearing this. "I had told you not to interfere with anything that was going on, didn't I? Everything was happening according to my plan. Do you know what the Truth is?" asked God.
"No. Please tell me," Said Surendra.
