The King's Doubt
There once lived a king who didn’t believe in God. His Prime Minister was troubled by this and tried to convince the King that there was indeed a God ruling the universe. But the King remained unconvinced and finally challenged the minister with three questions:
- Where is God?
- Which way does He look?
- What is the nature of His work?
The Prime Minister had no answers and went home disappointed. But his bright young son offered to answer the King's questions. With hesitation, the minister allowed him to try.
The Boy's Answers
On the chosen day, the boy went to the court. The King asked, “Where is God?”
The boy asked for a jug of milk and told the King to find butter in it. The King replied, “Butter needs to be churned out of the milk — it can’t be seen now.”
The King then asked, “Which way does God look?” The boy asked the windows to be opened and sunlight to pour in. “Which direction is sunlight pointing to?”
The King said, “It lights up the whole room, not just one direction.”
Then came the final question: “What is the nature of God’s work?”
The boy brought in a cow and asked the King, “What is the colour of the cow?”
“Brown.”
“And the grass it eats?”
“Green.”
“And the milk it gives?”
“White.”
Then the boy said, “How old am I?”
“Twelve.”
“And you?”
“Fifty.”
