Introduction
Lilly was a very pious woman who prayed to God every day. One day, after her prayers, she thought for a long time and said, "O God, all my life, I have lived as you have directed me to. I have been a good human being and have done my best. But today, I want to ask you for something. If I have truly done my duty, I want you to grant me a favor."
The Lord's Promise
The Lord answered, "Ask and it shall be yours!" Lilly said, "Lord, I wish to see you with my own eyes." The Lord replied, "I promise you that I shall pay you a visit tomorrow. Be ready for my visit."
Lilly's Preparations
Lilly had never been so happy in her life. The next day, she painstakingly cleaned and decorated her house and prepared the most delicious food to welcome the Lord to her humble home. While she was preparing food, she heard a knock at her door. She rushed to open the door and found that it was the newspaper vendor. "Go away! Come back later. I have important visitors today," she shouted.
Disappointments and Expectations
After finishing her chores, Lilly sat waiting for God. Again, someone knocked at the door. Expecting God, she opened it with a huge smile on her face. But to her disappointment, it was her next-door neighbor. "Sorry, I am busy today," she said and shooed her away.
The Third Visitor
Next came her friend, and Lilly also sent her away. She then sat waiting for hours expecting God to arrive at any minute. But no one came. By evening, Lilly was close to tears. "How can God not keep His promise?" she thought.
Lilly's Question
The next morning, during her prayers, with tears in her eyes, she asked Him, "Why didn't you fulfill your promise to me, O Lord?"
The Lord's Response
But God answered, "I did, Lilly. I came to meet you not once, not twice, but thrice. And each time, you asked me to leave."
Realization
"When did you come to meet me, Lord?" she asked, confused. He replied, "Try and recall who came to visit you yesterday."
Surprised, she said, "But they were the newspaper vendor, my neighbor, and my friend! When did you come?"
Pearls of Wisdom
This story teaches us the important lesson that God’s presence is not limited to any specific form or time. He is present everywhere, in everyone, and in everything. By showing kindness and respect to everyone we meet, we honor God’s presence in them.
