Guru Nanak and the Bowl of Milk

The story of Guru Nanak’s encounter with the holy men of Multan and the message he shared about inclusion and the importance of goodness.

The Message to the Holy Men

Once during their travels, Guru Nanak and Mardana reached the city of Multan, which was known for the many holy men living there. Many people sought solutions to their problems and offered gifts and money to these holy men. Upon hearing that Guru Nanak had arrived in the city, the holy men grew worried. They did not want their popularity to decrease, so they decided to send him a message.

They sent a messenger with a bowl filled up to the brim with milk. The message accompanying the bowl read: 'There are plenty of holy men here. There is neither room nor need for any more.'

Guru Nanak’s Response

The messenger approached Guru Nanak and asked if he had any message to give to the holy men. Guru Nanak picked a jasmine flower and dropped it into the bowl. Miraculously, the flower floated on the milk without spilling a single drop.

Guru Nanak then gave the messenger his message for the holy men.

Pearls of Wisdom

1. What was the message that Guru Nanak gave to the holy men?
Guru Nanak’s message was, "Just like there is enough place in this bowl for this flower, similarly, there is always place in the world for good things. There is enough place in this world for everyone."
🌟 Moral: Goodness and positive things always have space in the world, and there is room for everyone. Never be afraid of new ideas or people.
