The Successor of Guru Amar Das
The Test of Patience and Perseverance
Once, Guru Amar Das was looking to choose a successor to take over his spiritual duties. He decided to test his two sons-in-law, one of whom would be the next Guru.
He asked both of them to build a platform according to his instructions. The two sons-in-law completed their platforms, but when the Guru inspected them, he told them, "Destroy both of them and build new platforms again."
The two sons-in-law followed the Guru’s orders and rebuilt the platforms. However, when the Guru inspected them again, he said, "Destroy both of them and build new platforms again."
This happened not just once, but three, four, five, and even six times. The elder of the two sons-in-law grew tired and gave up. But Jetha, the younger son-in-law, continued building the platforms, doing so with unwavering patience.
Jetha's Reward
Finally, after the seventh attempt, the Guru was satisfied with Jetha’s dedication and perseverance. The Guru declared that Jetha would be his successor and gave him the name Ram Das, which means "Servant of God." Guru Ram Das became the fourth Guru of the Sikhs.
