Mardana and Guru Nanak
A story of generosity and spiritual detachment from material excess.
The Journey to Lahore
Mardana, Guru Nanak's devoted companion, had traveled with him for 47 years, helping spread the message of God. One day, on their journey from Sultanpur to Lahore, Mardana sought permission from the Guru to visit a nearby village to ask for food. Guru Nanak agreed.
The kind villagers gave Mardana plenty of food, along with a bundle of clothes. Grateful, he returned to Guru Nanak with all the offerings.
The Guru's Guidance
Guru Nanak looked at the food and clothes and gently said something to Mardana that carried great spiritual weight.
Pearls of Wisdom
1. What did Guru Nanak say to Mardana?
Guru Nanak told Mardana to distribute the excess food and the clothes to the poor and needy.
2. What was the reason behind doing so?
The Guru explained that keeping more than what is needed from charity encourages greed. A person who hoards is of no help to others and moves away from the spirit of service.
🌾 Moral: True charity lies in taking only what is needed and sharing the rest. Accumulating excess—even in the name of good—leads to attachment and selfishness.
