Bhasmasura and Mohini - A Moral Story for Children
Bhasmasura and Mohini
A fascinating tale from Indian mythology that shows how intelligence and grace can overcome even the most dangerous power.

Boons and Arrogance

Once there was an asura named Bhasmasura. He was not very intelligent but he wanted to become powerful. He performed great austerities to please Lord Shiva. After many years, Lord Shiva was pleased and appeared before him. "What do your desire, Bhasmasura?" asked Lord Shiva.

Bhasmasura replied, "I wish that whosoever I put my right hand on, shall immediately be reduced to ashes."

"Tathastu," said the Lord.

A Dangerous Desire

Then Bhasmasura saw Goddess Parvati. She was so beautiful that Bhasmasura wanted to marry her. Since she was already married to Lord Shiva, he decided that he would burn up Lord Shiva and marry the Goddess. So he tried to put his hand on Lord Shiva's head but Lord Shiva went away from him. But Bhasmasura was determined to marry Goddess Parvati and kept following him everywhere.

Enter Mohini

Lord Shiva called out to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini the enchantress. Mohini was so beautiful that Bhasmasura immediately fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. Mohini told him that she would do so but on one condition. She was an accomplished dancer and wanted to marry an accomplished dancer.

She told him that they would have a dance contest. If Bhasmasura could copy her dance moves, she would gladly marry him. Bhasmasura readily agreed. Mohini began to dance. Bhasmasura began to copy her moves.

Pearls of Wisdom

1. Why did Mohini ask Bhasmasura to dance?
Bhasmasura was trying to copy Mohini's moves and so he let his guard down. In the course of the dance, Mohini put her right hand on her head. Without thinking, Bhasmasura also put his right hand on his head and went up in flames.
🌟 Moral of the Story: Power without wisdom can destroy. Intelligence and calm thinking can outwit even the strongest force. 🌟
