Guru Tegh Bahadur and the Imposters

A test of truth, a revelation of wisdom – the story of how a devoted merchant discovered the true Guru among many imposters.

The Mystery of the Next Guru

After Guru Har Krishan passed away from smallpox in Delhi, he left a cryptic message: "Baba Bakale"—indicating that the next Guru would be found in the town of Bakala.

Imposters Appear

As news of the Guru’s death spread, 22 imposters in Bakala declared themselves the next Guru and set up courts to attract followers. Meanwhile, Guru Tegh Bahadur quietly meditated, away from attention.

Makhan Shah’s Vow

Trader Makhan Shah’s ship was caught in a violent storm. He prayed that if his life was spared, he would donate 500 gold coins to the true Guru. When saved, he reached Bakala—only to find confusion and deception.

The Revelation

To test them, Makhan Shah offered each 'Guru' a single gold coin. All accepted it without question. But when he approached Guru Tegh Bahadur, the Guru calmly reminded him of the full vow of 500 coins. Instantly, Makhan Shah recognized the true Guru.

Pearls of Wisdom

1. How was Makhan Shah convinced that Guru Tegh Bahadur was the true Guru?
Unlike the imposters, Guru Tegh Bahadur revealed the amount Makhan Shah had privately vowed—500 coins—without being told. This divine knowledge proved he was the true Guru, and not an imposter.
🌟 Moral: Truth always reveals itself. The truly divine are humble and wise — their light shines without seeking attention.
