Guru Gobind Singh’s Call

In 1699, on Baisakhi day, Guru Gobind Singh summoned all his Sikhs. A vast crowd gathered. He proclaimed, "To build an army of the pure, I need one head. Who will volunteer?"

The Test of Faith

Silence fell over the crowd, until one brave man stepped forward. The Guru took him into a tent. Moments later, he emerged with a sword stained with blood.

The Guru asked for another head. Again, one stepped forward. This happened five times in total. The stunned crowd watched in disbelief, unsure of what was happening.

The Revelation

Then the Guru emerged with the five men – alive, dressed in robes, radiating peace. He had not killed them, but tested their faith and courage. They became the first members of the Khalsa – the Panj Pyare.
